DOWNHILL DEMESNE AND MUSSENDEN TEMPLE, NORTHERN IRELAND
If you have read my articles on Northern Ireland, you will know that the Downhill area and the Mussenden Temple are one of my very favourite spots here. And once you see a picture of the sprawling landscape, it will be easy to understand why.
The ruins of the Downhill house sitting in the middle of the vast green lushness and then the sight of the temple perched on the edge of a cliff…….it’s all a very storybook location.
The Downhill house was basically a mansion built in the 18th century by the Earl Bishop. While the Mussenden Temple was built to be used as his library. It’s very easy to see why he chose this particular location for building the properties.
It is BREATHTAKING!
There are spectacular views wherever you look. Also, as the estate sits on top of a hill, you get wonderful views of the ocean and the lovely Downhill and Benone Beach from here. (Another of my VERY favourite spots in Northern Ireland).
I can just imagine myself sitting inside the library and enjoying alternating between reading a good book and looking out at the fascinating ocean from the big windows. It must have been a captivating feeling.
I highly recommend stopping here whenever you are in the area. If you like fresh air and the feeling of being completely free with vast beautiful views surrounding you, then this is the place for you. Plus, it’s a haven for photographers!
