After that defeat, he withdrew from the bronze medal match in the mixed doubles competition where he was playing with Nina Stojanovic.
Djokovic cited the games as the reason for this extended break before the US Open, posting on social media that he was pulling out of the Western and Southern Open.
The Serb won last year’s version of the event, although it took place at Flushing Meadows itself as part of the adaptations made as a result of the pandemic.
Djokovic said: “I’m taking a bit longer to recover after quite a taxing journey from the Australian Open to Tokyo.
“Sadly this means I won’t be ready to compete in Cincinnati this year so I’ll be turning my focus to the US Open and spending more time with my family. Can’t wait to see you in New York soon!”
