Zverev slammed the idea that the Swiss star and the world No 6 would retain the GOAT title because they had been around longer and earned fans earlier in their careers.
He added: “You can’t always go against the numbers and say that Roger or Rafa are better because we’ve all been fans of them from an early age. Sometimes you have to look at things realistically and Novak’s records are simply a fact.”
The 24-year-old has previously stuck up for Djokovic, including over the Australian Open vaccine mandate.
Zverev landed himself in hot water when he declared that the tournament should make an exception for the nine-time champion and allow him to play without getting jabbed.
Following his semi-final victory over the Serb at the ATP Finals, the 19-time title winner said: “This is not about tennis, this is about the virus. We are visiting a different country and they are allowing us to enter, we need to follow the rules.
“Djokovic is number 1 in the world so he should be there, hopefully the government will make an exemption or whatever.”
