The Handmaid’s Tale season 5: Janine dies as she helps Hannah escape Gilead? | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

The Handmaid’s Tale fans were hopeful both Janine (played by Madeline Brewer) and June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) would make it to Canada as they managed to get to the front line of the war between Gilead and the rest of America in season four. Unfortunately, an air strike separated the friends and while June was taken as a refugee to Canada, Janine was taken back to Gilead where she came face to face with Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) once more. With Janine back in Gilead, could she manipulate Aunt Lydia into helping her rescue Hannah (Jordana Blake)?

It’s clear Aunt Lydia is starting to have doubts about how things are run in Gilead, particularly after Janine begged her not to make her a handmaid again.

Aunt Lydia has always felt protective of Janine and would do anything to stop her getting into trouble.

Could it be that she will help Janine to rescue Hannah to reunite her with Hannah?

June risked her own life to rescue several children in the season three finale so with Janine back in Gilead, she may feel she has to continue her legacy.

Wanting to show June just how much they mean to one another, Janine could risk everything to reunite Hannah with her family.

But there’s never a happy ending in The Handmaid’s Tale so it’s likely if Janine were to help a child get out of Gilead, she will have to pay for her actions.

Could Janine end up on The Wall for her actions or could she even be killed as Hannah is sent across the border to Canada?

Speaking about Janine and June’s relationship, actress Madeline commented on how determined the handmaids are to escape and get their children back.

Knowing June hasn’t been able to save Hannah, Janine may put herself in danger to complete her friend’s mission.

Madeline explained: “June at this point, she’s really motivated by revenge and by anger.

“She’s also, for four seasons, been motivated by saving her own daughter but in this moment, getting to the front, going to the front of a war, and risking it all, risking our lives and sacrificing lives, I think Janine as a friend is a little worried about her.

“And is also like, ‘Hey I’ve just followed you blindly for a long time and I don’t know about you right now.’

“So I think that’s a very important turning point for Janine to think, ‘You know what, I may have to look at this a little more closely and not just follow June so blindly.’

“But that relationship between the two of them is so powerful because there’s a maternal energy to it and they’re really close friends.

“June feels responsible for Janine and Janine, there’s a maternal element that they sometimes feel like Janine is a place holder for Hannah.

“You know, ‘If I keep Janine alive then I can get to Hannah.’ Trauma does weird stuff to your brain.”

She continued to Gold Derby: “Allowing Janine to step into the role of a co-person instead of someone June has to take care of was a little humbling for June, recognising Janine’s autonomy, especially in episode five, and what Janine can contribute and what she really wants out of her life.

“They don’t want the same things and we see that in that heartbreaking scene for them to leave each other even though I know what happens.”

The Handmaid’s Tale seasons 1-4 are available to stream on Hulu now. Season 4 is currently airing on Channel 4 in the UK on Sunday at 9pm.
