After Elliot Stabler (played by Christopher Meloni) tragically lost his wife in season one of Law and Order: Organized Crime, the character had an emotional reunion with former partner Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay). The pair teamed up once again to take down mafia boss Richard Wheatley (McDermott) and it appears the villain will be returning for the anticipated second season of the NBC hit. Will Wheatley attempt to destroy Stabler’s life further in the upcoming season?
After creating havoc in Stabler’s life in the latest Law and Order spin-off, Organized Crime, it has been confirmed star McDermott will be returning for the series’ second season.
Deadline reports the compelling villain Wheatley will continue to have a major recurring arc in the upcoming season.
The actor has closed a deal with NBC to return, which is reported to be the most lucrative deal for a guest spot on network television.
McDermott originally signed on for a one season arc but the antagonist was so popular creator Dick Wolf was desperate to have him back.

What will Wheatley’s return mean for Stabler going forward?
After Kathy (Isabel Gillies) died in a horrific car bomb, Stabler scrambled to discover the true culprit of his wife’s death.
In An Inferior Product, the detective learned their identity and it was revealed to be Angela (Tamara Taylor), the ex-wife of Wheatley.
Angela had arranged for the hit on his wife after being manipulated by her ex-husband.
Stabler and the NYPD organised crime task force became determined to stop the businessman and mob boss in any way possible.
Stabler had previously been romantically interested in Angela and the two had shared a kiss.
However, later in the season, Stabler’s heartbreak at Angela’s involvement in Kathy’s deal became too much for him to handle.
“You remember the moment we met, I told you that I would find the person responsible for murdering my wife,” Stabler told her. “And the whole time it was you. Why?”
Angela appeared visibly upset at Stabler’s line of questioning but has not yet paid the price for killing his wife.
In season two, as Stabler attempted to move forward knowing someone he cared about murdered his wife, so how will Wheatley’s reappearance change things for the character?
In the season finale, Forget it, Jake; it’s Chinatown, Wheatley was arrested for his crimes but he managed to escape.
He went on to organise the poisoning of his ex-wife and as she lies in hospital, fans are waiting to find out her fate.
After the news McDermott would be returning, fans were ecstatic and quickly took to Twitter to express their joy at the charming villain’s return.
One fan simply said: “Best news ever!!!”
Another added: “YAY!! This makes me even more excited for the new season.”
“Great news only thing Richard tends to steal the show no offence to Elliot or Olivia. Not a lot of villains are that charming,” a third commented. (sic)
“Can’t wait to watch my favourite villain again,” someone else remarked.
