And, whilst Lowry would like to see McIlroy succeed for Team Ireland the Irishman admits there will still be some individual competition between the two come Sunday.
He said: “I’d obviously like to see Rory do well because you’re Team Ireland but it would be different Sunday afternoon if you were out there because you’d want to beat each other.

Lowry added: “So you do feel that team element, travelling to the course together, but when you’re out there you’re playing for yourself, playing for your family and your country.
“That’s the reason I’m out here anyway and I’d love to bring a medal home this week. That’s my number one motivation. It’s not to come here and enjoy the Olympics experience, even though I am doing that.”
