Australian golfer Cameron Smith has revealed his Aussie-style haircut ahead of his Olympic debut in Tokyo this week. Smith – who is known for his mullet style – has revealed an added patriotic bonus to his haircut, shaving the letters ‘AUS’ into the side of his head.
The Queenslander will team up with fellow Australian Marc Leishman this week to wear the green and gold at this year’s Olympic golf event at Tokyo’s Kasumigaseki Country Club.
Speaking ahead of his Olympic debut and about his new patriotic cut Smith said: “Yeah, I mean, it’s the Olympics. It doesn’t happen too often.
“I thought I would give Australia a shoutout on the side of the melon. I thought about it for a few weeks beforehand and then I just said stuff it, I’m going to do it and I think it’s been received pretty good.”
Despite Smith labelling the response he has received for his new style as ‘pretty good’, one man who ruled out following in his footsteps was teammate Leishman as the six-time PGA Tour winner ruled out any chance of him sporting the ‘AUS’ look.

Speaking of the possibility of sporting the hairstyle Leishman said: “No, I don’t think I’ve got the head for it, to be honest I’ll leave that to Cam.”
With golf more than often an individual sport, it is rare for the game’s top players to represent their nation on the biggest stage. Therefore, Smith is relishing the chance to perform as an Australian Olympian this week.
“The green and gold, the coat of arms on the chest just hits a little bit different. I mean, it’s always nice to play for something bigger than just yourself every week and yeah, it should be good.”
As one of the few Australians on the PGA Tour however, teammate Leishman says he feels like he is used to representing his nation week-on-week across the USA and beyond, but the 37-year-old is still revelling at the thought of becoming an Olympic athlete this week.
He said: “I think as Australians playing on the PGA Tour, in a way we do represent our country every week. That‘s the way I feel.

“Just this week where we’re wearing the green and gold and we have got Australia on our hats and shirts, which is an, I think adds a bit more to the prestige, I think and I’m certainly very proud to call myself an Olympian now and I know Cam is as well.”
The Australian pair will join the rest of the field in getting their Olympic campaign off and running in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Leishman will be the first member of Team Australia to take to the course, as he heads out at 12:41am BST alongside Canada’s Corey Conners, and Hideki Matsuyama of host nation Japan.
Smith will follow just over an hour and a half later as he will join Norweigan star Vikor Hovland and South Africa’s Garrick Higgo at 2:14am BST.
